THE PROJECT

  • Postal delivery services are an important element of everyday life. Present and functioning in all European cities, the Postal Services network links 800million people a day.
  • Postal service operators have often been in the forefront of environmentally friendly innovation and such innovation remains an ongoing challenge that demands continuous renewal.

  • The Green Post project, which began in January 2008 and is scheduled to finish in June 2010, aims to improve energy efficiency and reduce air pollution in Italy, Belgium, Hungary, and Bulgaria. By substituting the gasoline vehicles currently in use in mail delivery services with electric and hybrid vehicles, the project will result in benefits such as reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

  • Before being largely implemented by the services industry, the overall effects of a more energy efficient fleet need to be properly analyzed from a socioeconomic perspective. The Green Post project is designed to be an exchange of best practices and lessons learned by postal delivery services which utilize electric and hybrid vehicles.
Primary Activities

  • Introduction of new electric and hybrid vehicles in the postal delivery services of four European Countries.

  • Elaboration of a socioeconomic model detailing all elements of the implementation of the new fleet.

  • Extensive information and communication activities at dedicated events and in coordination with local authorities, universities, and schools.
Expected Results
  • Improved energy efficiency and reduction in air pollution and CO2 emissions generated by postal delivery services in 4 EU Countries (Italy, Belgium, Hungary and Bulgaria).

  • Raise awareness in the general public to a degree that will increase the social responsibility assumed by major delivery service operators and stimulate the replication of similar initiatives in other European postal companies, as well as in the entire EU transport sector.

  • Produce a viable, economically sound, energy efficient alternative for postal service operators.

  • Support the electric vehicle market.
